Calico Cottages from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

Since I haven't been able to do any quilting in the past couple of weeks, I asked my sister if she would send me pictures of her finished Calico Cottages quilt.

Her cat, Quinn, wanted to be in the picture while he was checking out the quilt. Her kitties become a problem when it comes time to work on the binding.

Gail really disliked foundation paper-piecing when she started this quilt.  It took about 3 days for the process to sink in.  Once she got it, she got it, and she couldn't stop making the little ...

Calico Cottages from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

My sister, Gail, has a beautiful Calico Cottages flimsy ready to send off to be machine quilted.

The little cottages within the setting triangles, measure 3" x 3".  You can see the wonderful selection of strips surrounding the block.

This quilt is truly a scrappy quilt and it's amazing just how much fabric you use while making it.  It feels so good to put all of those scraps to work and showcase them.

Here are the corners.  The little 9-patch has strip after strip around it.  Gail's fabrics are all from the same family of reproduction ...

Calico Cottages on Steroids from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

In between making pumpkins, I've been working on a large Calico Cottage quilt which has been on my design wall for a few weeks now.

Originally used a dark teal for the posts.

I went back and forth between plaid posts and teal posts.  Then I decided to audition a strip of plaid in the border between the red setting triangle and another border.  The plaid posts won.  When I looked at the overall look with the teal posts, all I saw was teal popping out at me.  The plaid is muted, and it tied the quilt ...

Retreating from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

I spent my week preparing a few quilting projects for a retreat that I'm attending this week with my guild members at Zephyr Point at beautiful Lake Tahoe.

I've had an idea circulating through my brain about making pumpkins with my Hearthstone fabric line.  The first two pumpkins came to fruition.  I decided to incorporate Marcus Fabric wools with my cottons.  There will be either 9 or 12 pumpkins.  Mr. Joe suggested I name the quilt Rodent Resort as there will be little mice scampering around the quilt.  This name made me laugh and I'm ...

Calico Cottages Tutorial from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

I've been busy here under the pines at Sew'n Wild Oaks.  My first retreat of the year begins on Sunday.  The project for all of the retreats this year is my Calico Cottages pattern. I've been making more of these addicting cottages using my fabric collection called HEARTHSTONE by Marcus Fabrics.  The line will be out this summer.

I put a new tutorial together which you can download and print.  You can find the tutorial by clicking HERE. The tutorial walks you through the assembly of the roof section of the cottage.  Once you 'nail ...

A Neighborhood of Calico Cottages from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

My post today is totally dedicated to my Calico Cottages pattern the quilters constructed at the Pieceful Gathering quilt retreat last week.  I'll warn you now the little cottages become addicting.

The little cottages with the scrappy frame started popping up all around the room.  Instead of hammers and nails, the girls were building their neighborhoods with sewing machines and thread.

The dark background also makes an interesting cottage asleep in the night.

Cindy put a woman's face in the center of her window.  The possibilities are endless.

Here's Sandy with her precious block.  The ...

Pieceful Gathering Retreat Preparations from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

While we still have power during the great snowpocalypse of 2023, I've been preparing all of my teaching materials for the retreat hosted by Pieceful Gathering Quilt Shop in Fox River Grove, IL.  I'm teaching Calico Cottages during the 3-day retreat.

I have all of my teaching materials created and nicely organized in a binder.  I've sent boxes of quilts and tutorials back to Illinois, and hopefully everything will arrive on time and in one piece.

I've been using my own fabric collection called Hearthstone for teaching.  I'm just having way too much ...

It's Almost a Wrap from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

I finished machine quilting Calico Cottages the other day.  It is so interesting when I take quilt off the long arm and get to view the entire quilt instead of just the 16" under the needle.

It seems as though this quilt was on the machine forever since the machine had a mental breakdown.....which made me close to breaking down. Elk Grove Sew and Vac had me back up and running within a week.  My long arm is in my garage, and I nearly froze to death in the 30 degree temps outside.  The warmest I was ...

Foundation Paper-Piecing Tutorial from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

You quilters are keeping me busy shipping orders for Calico Cottages!

The pattern assumes that you know how to paper-piece the little cottages.  I've posted a tutorial for foundation paper-piecing in Google Docs on how to make the cottages. I use my tutorial all the time as a refresher course on paper-piecing.  You can find and print off the tutorial HERE.

If you want to have the front door facing a different direction, then just turn the roof section over and you have a new orientation.

When I paper-piece I make the same section over several times ...

Calico Cottages from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

I just listed Calico Cottages in my Etsy shop.  This is the quilt that I'm teaching at the Pieceful Gathering Quilt Shop Retreat in March in Fox River Grove, IL.  You can purchase the pattern HERE.

The quilt isn't quilted yet since my machine is spending some time at the spa at the Elk Grove Sew and Vac for a little R & R and an overhaul.  I guess I've been working her too hard.  I hope to get her back this week and I can finish what I started.

This is the only picture I ...

A Total Breakdown from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

There I was, just zipping along on my long arm when it started acting up like a petulant little kid.  All progress on machine quilting Calico Cottage came to a stop as my thread started to shred.

I bought my HandiQuilter in 2006 and it has been a reliable workhorse.....until yesterday.  I performed every maintenance procedure I could think of from changing the needle, the bobbin, and the spool of thread.  I cleaned her bobbin case, oiled her, and patted her on the head a few times, and she still persisted in thread shredding.  Say that 3 ...

Machine Quilting in the Pines from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

This week I've turned my attention to marking and machine quilting Calico Cottages.  I hope to release the pattern at the end of the week.  I decided to do crosshatching around the cottage for an old-fashioned look and feel.

This quilt is only 64" x 64" which is a nice size for my long arm.  It still takes me awhile to get it perfectly lined up and loaded on the machine.  I made one pass of feathers across the top and then I got too cold.  My long arm is in my garage, and it was a ...

Catch up Day from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

So much has taken place since my last post.....all good.  I've been away from the cabin a lot over the past couple of weeks, so now I'm trying valiantly to get ready for Christmas and work on some projects.

We had quite the storm over the past few days.  Our little community received five inches of rain topped off by six inches of snow.  I put on my snow clothes, boots and Yaktrax's and headed out into the storm to take some pictures of the Calico Cottages flimsy. I felt like a little kid ...

Calico Cottages from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

I've been working on Calico Cottages, my newest design.  Many thanks to 'anonymous' who came up with the perfect name for this quilt.

I got as far as putting one of the inner borders on the other night and this is as far as I got.  It is just a figment of my imagination until I nail this idea down.  I try to be different when I design a quilt, and this one floats my boat.  I only used fabrics from my Marcus Fabrics stash.  I had hundreds of 1" strips already cut and were begging to ...
